The University of Texas's signature McConnell Tower just happened to be framed by sheer luck when Jonathan Snow's "The Sustaining Arch" was placed here on the Library Mall in 2008.

This bronze arch is sculpted to resemble books stacked atop each other, and measures 10' by 7' by 18". The books were cast from molds of real books, and one can actually make out the pages and even a few titles. It was completed by Jonathan Snow in 2008 as he finished his M.F.A. in sculpture, and was placed up on the brick wall to keep it safe from pedestrian traffic. This had the coincidental result of making it a great place to get a framed photo of the mall fountains and the university's clock tower. A dedication plaque was placed here as a student memorial in 2019, and it reads:

Jonathan Snow
The Sustaining Arch
2008

In memory of
our fellow Eagles no longer in flight.
Dedicated by the Student Government Association
and Graduate Student Council

Your view through the arch is of McConnell Tower, the defining component of the Administration Building -- today, the Hurley Administration Building -- that was constructed in 1955-1956. The tower bears the name of President Emeritus W. Joseph McConnell, who passed on prior to its completion. As president, he oversaw the construction of twenty-two major buildings on campus from 1934 to 1951. The concept was first put to paper in 1928, envisioned as a memorial to students who served in World War I, but the Great Depression put that on hold. Some concepts from the initial plan were retained when the tower was finally realized, and its electronic carillon (which replaced the original bells in 1972) can be heard at all times of the day. Be on the lookout for it to turn green after athletic victories, as the University of North Texas is known as the "Mean Green". If you know an alumnus, ask to see their class ring, as the McConnell Tower is featured under the year they graduated.
