Op 10 mei 1940 om 4 uur ’s ochtends zijn de eerste vliegtuigen hoorbaar boven Veenendaal. Al gauw is het duidelijk dat de oorlog nu echt begonnen is. Omdat Veenendaal in de Grebbelinie ligt, moet de bevolking geëvacueerd worden. Nu moet blijken hoe goed de maandenlange voorbereiding werkt. De Veenendalers krijgen opdracht om wat spullen in te pakken en eten voor één dag mee te nemen. Te voet vertrekken ze dan naar Elst, waar ze aan boord zullen gaan van schepen die hen verder naar het westen zullen brengen. Ze vinden onderdak in Bergambacht, Ammerstol, Stolwijk, Haastrecht en nog vele andere plaatsen in de omgeving.
Na de capitulatie, mogen de eerste mensen weer naar huis. Onderweg zien ze sporen van het oorlogsgeweld, maar in Veenendaal is niet gevochten.
Het oorlogsmonument in Haastrecht is een teken van dankbaarheid voor de gastvrijheid die de Haastrechtse bevolking in 1940 heeft geboden en is onthuld in 1941.
De tekst op de steen luidt:

On May 10, 1940 at 4 a.m. the first airplanes can be heard over Veenendaal. It soon becomes clear that the war has really started. Because Veenendaal is located in the Grebbe-line, the population must be evacuated. It must now be seen how well the months-long preparation works. The Veenendalers are instructed to pack some things and bring food for one day. They will then leave on foot for Elst, where they will board ships that will take them further west. They find shelter in Bergambacht, Ammerstol, Stolwijk, Haastrecht and many other places in the area.
After the capitulation, the first people are allowed to go home. On the way they see traces of the war, but there was no fighting in Veenendaal.
The war memorial in Haastrecht is a sign of gratitude for the hospitality offered by the Haastrecht population in 1940 and was unveiled in 1941.
