The original temple was built in 1673 under the command of the bishop D. Francisco Barreto II. By then this location was the main entrance to the village.
In 1893 that church was demolished due to some public works which took place here. The new church, the one which currently can be seen on the location, was built a few meters aside.
As it's not far from the cemetery it's used as a support for funerals.
