The "Isla Mamey" (English: Mamey Island) is located at the southeastern coast of the province of Colon, at the Caribbean side. Reached by 10 minutes boat trip from Puerto Lindo dock, besides a local church.
Its name comes from the "mamey sapote" (Pouteria sapota) fruit, a specie of tree that is native to southern Mexico and northern South America, cultivated in Central America, and the Caribbean.
The surrounding fringe reef contains Brain and Sheet coral formations, Sea fans, Staghorns and Rods. As you explore the many caverns and passages within the reef, it is likely that you will see schools of Snapper, Angels, Jacks and Blue tang. There are many other possibilities - Parrotfish, Trunkfish, and Damselfish to name a few.
To reach this spectacular hideaway, you take a pleasant drive along the Bay of Buena Ventura, Province of Colon. You will pass through the town of Portobelo, home to the famed Black Christ and the ruins of several Spanish fortresses.
At the very swallow shore beginners can snorkel around an old sunken dock to enjoy the view of tiny colorful fishes.
