The Derby Historical Museum is located in a two-story school building constructed in 1924. This cabin is on display in what was once the gymnasium/auditorium.

The cabin is a one-story rough-hewn log building with a gable roof. A wide viewing window has been built into the end so the public can view the interior and its furnishings.

NOTE: If you plan to visit, suggest you call first as their hours are somewhat limited during the current Covid-19 epidemic. Currently, (October 2020), the museum is only open on Saturdays from 10:00-2:00 or by group appointment, from April to October. Eventually, the museum may get back to an expanded schedule. Its original location is stated as six miles southeast of the town of Oxford. We have estimated those coordinates at N37 12.084 W97 05.719. Its intermediate location at David Administration building on the campus of Friends University in Wichita would be N37 40.674 W97 21.970.

A informational poster on the cabin reads:

Log cabins were built early as 1850 in
Kansas Territory. This one was built in
1870 six miles southeast of Oxford.

Cabin walls, floors and joists are of
cottonwood; sheating is of sycamore. All
material was cut on Beaver Creek in
Cowboy Country by the first owner, Fred Brown.

The donor Charles Orr came to Kansas
in 1878 from Illinois. He worked as a
cowboy. He married Tennie Peden of
Hackney, Kansas. They began housekeeping
in this cabin in 1897.

The cabin was dismantled and moved to
the museum by Friends University students
and rebuilt by Mark Reeve.

In the summer of 1995 the cabin was once again dismantled piece by
piece and removed from the fifth floor of the David Administration
building at Friends University in Wichita by a group of dedicated
volunteers from the Derby community including many members of the
Derby Volunteer Fire Department. In the fall and summer of 1995-96 it was
reassembled in the gymnasium of the old two-story red brick school
house that now houses the Derby Historical Society and Museum.
