"S'il existe des traces d'un habitat très ancien sur le site de Sézanne, il faut attendre l'an 813 pour voir apparaître le nom de la commune sur une charte comtale. Mais c'est sous l'autorité des Comtes de Champagne, à partir du XIème siècle, que la ville connaît un véritable développement démographique et économique en se voyant inscrite sur la route des Foires de Champagne. Au XIIème siècle, elle se dote de solides fortifications. L'actuelle rue de l'Hôtel-de-Ville constitue l'axe le plus ancien d'entrée dans la cité après avoir franchi la porte du Pied-de-Cane dont il reste une tour. La rue Cogne-Fort donne une idée de ce que pouvait être le quartier au Moyen Âge avec des ruelles étroites. Le grand incendie de 1632 a malheureusement fait disparaître la majeure partie du patrimoine médiéval. Le Puits Doré, datant du XVI° siècle, est le plus ancien puits de Sézanne. Remarquable par sa ferronnerie, peut-être dorée à l'origine, il est classé au titre des Monuments Historiques depuis 1911.
On dit que la rue Cogne-Fort doit son nom à la présence de forgerons frappant sur leur enclume ou bien à l'attaque surprise de brigands tapant sur le malencontreux passant."
