Prime Meridian Marker - East India Dock Road - Greenwich Meridian Markers on Waymarking.com

East India Dock Road is not a very hospitable habitat for pedestrians, but the line of the Greenwich Meridian was marked on the pavement beside both the north and south carriageways of the road in 1991. The coordinates for this Waymark are for the marker on the south side.

The paving slabs are interrupted by two bands of dark-coloured brick, enclosing a strip of red bricks arranged in a herring-bone pattern, across the wide pavement. The strip is angled perpendicular to the road rather than in alignment with the Meridian. Within the strip is positioned a single paving slab featuring a line angled to correspond to the line of the Meridian. Above and below the line are the words: THE GREENWICH MERIDIAN LINE - 0 LONGITUDE ESTABLISHED 1884. An identical arrangement of markers appears on the pavement on the north side of the road.

Additionally, on the south side only, there is a plaque that explains that the Meridian was marked and a London Plane Tree planted on 28 February 1991 by the Department of Transport to commemorate the widening of East India Dock Road. Principal amongst the dignitaries present was the then Minister of State for Transport Roger Freeman MP. The full text of the plaque can be seen in one of the gallery photographs.
