Clackmannanshire is the smallest of Scotland's counties, covering an area in the centre of the country from the River Forth to the south, to the Ochil Hills in the north. Despite its size it covers an extensive area of high ground, including the highest point of the Ochil Hills at Ben Cleuch.

The Ochil Hills cover a vast area of central Scotland, from Stirling in the west, running eastwards, and ending in the northern part of Fife. The section through Clackmannanshire covers the highest part of the range, with the southern flank above the Forth Valley being particularly steep, but despite this, the route to the summit is usually begun from this side, with access from the hillfoot towns of Alva and Tillicoultry climbing through steep glens, northwards via footpaths to gain the high tops.

Ben Cleuch is 2364 feet, 721 metres high, and is the high point of a rolling ridge running west to east. The summit is marked by an Ordnance Survey trig pillar within a circular stone shelter, and a view indicator which lies a few feet to the south. Views are extensive across much of central Scotland, with the best of them north-westwards to the mountains.
