Op veel spoorwegstations in Nederland hangen gedenkplaten met namen van slachtoffers uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Dit zijn namen van personeelsleden van NS, die tijdens de oorlog of kort na de oorlog als gevolg van oorlogshandelingen zijn overleden. Het gaat om uniforme plaquettes, die zijn aangebracht in 110 Nederlandse stationsgebouwen. Om tot een uniform beeld voor de gedenktekens te komen en om wildgroei in diverse uiteenlopende monumenten en gedenktekens te voorkomen, werd een basisontwerp gemaakt in de vorm van een standaard koperen plaquette met de namen van de slachtoffers per station of standplaats. Het basisontwerp voor deze plaquettes werd gemaakt door NS-architect ir. H.G.J. Schelling, die destijds ook lid was van de Gedenktekencommissie. De plaquettes werden vervaardigd door H.Th. Boermeester van de NV Ateliers voor Kunstnijverheid Winkelman te Amsterdam. Tegenwoordig zijn veel van deze plaquettes nog altijd aanwezig op stations: sommigen keurig onderhouden en regelmatig gepoetst; anderen daarentegen danig verweerd en bekrast of bezoedeld. Overigens hoort het bij de aard van het materiaal dat de plaquettes ‘verweren’ door een laag patina.
In de stationshal van Haarlem vindt u 3 van dit soort koperen gedenkplaten, boven elkaar, in de stationshal. Oorspronkelijk hing hier alleen de middelste plaquette, maar na de afbraak van de treinstations van IJmuiden en Velsen zijn er twee plaquettes bij geplaatst.

Many railway stations in the Netherlands have plaques with names of World War II victims. These are names of NS staff members who died during the war or shortly after the war as a result of acts of war. These are uniform plaques, which have been placed in 110 Dutch station buildings. In order to achieve a uniform image for the memorials and to prevent proliferation in various different monuments and memorials, a basic design was made in the form of a standard copper plaque with the names of the victims per station or station. The basic design for these plaques was made by NS architect ir. H.G.J. Schelling, who was also a member of the Memorial Committee at the time. The plaques were made by H.Th. Boermeester of the NV Ateliers voor Kunstnijverheid Winkelman in Amsterdam. Today many of these plaques are still present at stations: some of them well maintained and regularly cleaned; others, on the other hand, are severely weathered and scratched or tarnished. Incidentally, it is part of the nature of the material that the plaques "weather" through a layer of patina.
In the station hall of Haarlem you will find 3 such copper plaques, one above the other, in the station hall. Originally only the middle plaque hung here, but after the demolition of the train stations of IJmuiden and Velsen two plaques were added.
