The history of the park begins in 1914 when a hydroelectric plant is built on the site. This has been going on for several years and in 1926 the place expands to become the Viestenz-Smith Mountain Park.
In 1934, The Civilian Conservation Corps CCC) begins construction of buildings in the park. Buildings are being built on both sides of the river, just as bridges are being built to cross the river. The buildings are made of wood and huge boulders to withstand any flooding from The Big Thomson River.
In 1976, there was a very large flood in which 145 people were killed. The whole area was destroyed by the water masses, but the buildings built by the CCC were still there. Also a major flood in 2013 destroyed the area which again had to be rebuilt. But the buildings built by the CCC still exist.
