In the spring of 2020, "Five sculptures—a gift from the art collection of Carol and Edward L. “Ed” Kaplan (ME ’65)—were installed on the grounds [of IIT] near the Ed Kaplan Family Institute for Innovation and Tech Entrepreneurship." (visit link)

Among these five was Series No. 36 Glass and Bronze by sculptor Jack Schmidt. The piece consists of a short column-like base on top of which sits a segment of a circle. The upper part of the segment has a scoop shape taken out, in which sits an orb. The colors are iridescent, making the piece quite striking.

"Jack Schmidt learned to blow glass at Bowling Green State University from the master glassblower Dominick Labino. Schmidt was intrigued by the material and devoted all his time to sculpting with glass, traveling to England to study collections and studio facilities. Sharing a studio with a sculptor prompted him to develop work in plate glass, and his large, geometric sculptures are assembled from layers of stone, metal, and glass." (visit link)
