After more than 40 years of service, S-61 is being phased out as a rescue helicopter in Denmark. 2 copies have been selected for museum use. The Danish Aviation Museum has been awarded U-240, it arrived in Stauning on 14 March 2007.

The helicopters were given a permanent base at Værløse Air Base. Three helicopters have been constantly deployed on standby at the air stations Ålborg, Skrydstrup and Værløse.

At the shipwreck of the ferry "Skagerrak" north of Hirtshals on 7 September 1966, the S-61 proved its excellence. In winds of storm strength and waves of 10 meters, five Danish S-61s helped to rescue all those on board from mainly drifting life rafts.

Since the acquisition of S-61, the Rescue Center has launched more than 16,000 missions, of which approx. 98 percent are done with just the S-61, and several thousand people can somehow thank the S-61 and its crews for life.

The helicopter flew for Squadron 722, which had Sleipner, Odin's eight - legged horse, as its distinguishing mark. See photo of one of the pilots' helmets in the photo gallery.
