The Roman Theater of Dougga is an ancient theater located in the Tunisian city of Dougga, Thugga in ancient times.
Dougga Theater was commissioned in 168 or 169 by Publius Marcius Quadratus, a member of one of the city's wealthiest families. An inscription in the theater still mentions the fact that Marcius Quadratus organized a large banquet and gymnastic games on the occasion of the inauguration of the theater.
The theater is built according to a typical Roman model, which has been common since the construction of the Theater of Pompey in Rome. The building is very similar to the theaters of Orange, Mérida and Pompeii. The cavea is built against a hill and can accommodate 3500 spectators on 19 rows. Although it is not a large theater, this number is striking because in ancient times Thugga had only 5000 inhabitants.
The theater is still in good condition and has been restored. The podium has been partially reconstructed with the still standing Corinthian columns. Originally these columns belonged to a stage wall (scaenae frons) two storeys high.
Together with the other Roman monuments of Dougga, the theater is on the World Heritage List of Unesco. The Dougga festival is held every summer.
