Westheimer Field, north of Norman, Oklahoma, is a small "reliever" airport with an impressive array of weather radars, thanks to the National Severe Storms Lab Radar Operations Center. Beginning with a WSR-57 in the early 1960s, the airport has been host to increasingly sophisticated weather radars, the latest of which is the
Advanced Technology Demonstrator. Of the several radars here, this waymark is set at the NEXRAD WSR-88D radar. Oklahoma's relatively flat terrain and, er, turbulent weather make it an excellent site for weather research. I have heard that the TV stations here had access to Doppler weather radar before Tinker Air Force Base had one!
