Æbelø (Apple Island) is a nature area without cultivated land. There is a single dwelling which is owned by a nature fund as well as an old lighthouse.
The island is special by the unspoiled nature. On Æbelø, there are old, protected oak trees, which are allowed to lie in the forest when they fall over, for the benefit of insects and birds. On the trip around the island, steep clay slopes are seen along the coast. Here you can see trees that have slipped down the coast.
On Æbelø there are only wild animals, fallow deer and mouflon. The white-tailed eagle breeds on Æbelø. In order not to disturb breeding eagles, there are paths to follow. On the north side of the island you can see seals
To visit Æbelø you must know the tide. At the car park there are signs with tide tables but it can also be found on the internet. (visit link)
The trip is 15-18 km in total, incl. tour of the island. From the car park, walk through the water 1.5 km to the first island, Æbelø Holm, by following marking poles that are placed at intervals. This is crossed and another stretch of water before you reach Æbelø itself.
It is not allowed to spend the night on Æbelø and the trip takes about 8 hours, as it must also keep up with the tide. There is no water on the island.
