Het baanvak tussen de Groningse plaatsen Stadskanaal en Veendam is in 1910 aangelegd door de Noordoosterlocaalspoorweg-Maatschappij (NOLS) en het baanvak tussen Stadskanaal en Musselkanaal in 1924 door de oorspronkelijke STAR, de Groningsch-Drentsche Spoorwegmaatschappij Stadskanaal-Ter Apel-Rijksgrens. Sinds 1938 was de gehele spoorlijn van de Nederlandse Spoorwegen.
Het oorspronkelijke in 1905 gebouwde station was een 2e klas type NOLS gebouw. Het station is in 1913 uitgebreid waardoor het twee keer zo groot werd als de andere NOLS-stations. In 1915 werd de naam gewijzigd in Stadskanaal Hoofdstation.
Het baanvak werd voor het personenverkeer gesloten op 17 mei 1953 en uiteindelijk is in 1979 het stationsgebouw afgebroken. Tot 1990 vond er nog wel goederenvervoer op het baanvak plaats.
In 1994 is Stadskanaal heropend als hoofdstation van de museumlijn van Museumspoorlijn STAR. Na de oprichting van deze stichting in 1992 nam deze het verstilde emplacement in Stadskanaal in gebruik als thuisbasis. In het najaar van 1997 is er op de plaats van het oude station een geheel nieuw stationsgebouw verrezen. Het gebouw combineert elementen van een SS-gebouw type vierde klasse en een NOLS-gebouw type eerste klasse. In dit nieuwe gebouw bevindt zich onder andere het kaartjesloket, het stationskantoor en de stationsrestauratie.
In 2007 is een nieuwe rijtuigloods gebouwd voor stalling van de rijtuigen met daarin ook een museum en educatiecentrum met vergaderruimte.
De stichting beschikt in Stadskanaal ook over een draaischijf, een aantal opstelsporen, een seinhuis, een waterhuis, een kolenbunker, een rijtuigloods en een werkplaats met werkput.

The original station built in 1905 was a 2nd class type NOLS building. The station was expanded in 1913 making it twice the size of the other NOLS stations. In 1915 the name was changed to Stadskanaal Hoofdstation.
The track section was closed to passenger traffic on May 17, 1953, and the station building was finally demolished in 1979. Until 1990, goods transport still took place on the route section.
Stadskanaal was reopened in 1994 as the main station of the museum line of the STAR Museum Railway. After the foundation of this foundation in 1992, it took the quiet yard in Stadskanaal into use as its home base. In the autumn of 1997, a completely new station building was built on the site of the old station. The building combines elements of a fourth-class SS building and a first-class NOLS building. This new building houses, among other things, the ticket office, the station office and the station restaurant.
In 2007 a new carriage shed was built for the storage of the carriages, including a museum and education center with meeting room.
In Stadskanaal, the foundation also has a turntable, a number of siding tracks, a signal box, a water house, a coal bunker, a carriage shed and a workshop with a work pit.
