In 1904 vestigden de gebroeders Van Haeren, twee ondernemers afkomstig uit 's-Hertogenbosch, zich in Gouda en begonnen op de hoek van de Dubbele Buurt en de Wijdstraat een zaak in manufacturen en dergelijke. Het bedrijf kreeg de naam Magazijn de Zon en werd een filiaal van Vroom & Dreesmann. Enkele jaren later kochten zij ook de naastgelegen woning en gaven de architect Piet Buskens de opdracht om beide panden te vervangen door een nieuw warenhuis. Buskens gaf het gebouw een jugendstilkarakter. Hij maakte daarbij gebruik van glas in lood, staal, natuursteen en siermetselwerk. Mede door de centrale ligging, recht tegenover de Markt, werd het een beeldbepalend gebouw in het centrum van Gouda.

Vroom en Dreesmann zou tot 1965 het pand blijven gebruiken. Daarna vonden respectievelijk een militaire dump, autodealer, een tapijt- en gordijnenwinkel en een gokautomatenhal er hun onderdak. In 1989 werd het pand gerestaureerd en zo veel mogelijk in de oude staat teruggebracht. Op de bovenverdieping werd een penthouse gerealiseerd. Inmiddels heeft de automatenhal het pand weer verlaten. In februari 2010 werd de ING-Bank in het gebouw gevestigd. Het pand is erkend als een gemeentelijk monument.

In 1904 the Van Haeren brothers, two entrepreneurs from 's-Hertogenbosch, established themselves in Gouda and started a business in drapery and the like on the corner of the Dubbele Buurt and Wijdstraat. The company was renamed Magazijn de Zon and became a branch of Vroom & Dreesmann. A few years later they also bought the neighboring house and commissioned the architect Piet Buskens to replace both buildings with a new department store. Buskens gave the building an Art Nouveau character. He made use of stained glass, steel, natural stone and ornamental masonry. Partly due to its central location, right across from the Markt, it became an iconic building in the center of Gouda.

Vroom en Dreesmann would continue to use the building until 1965. After that, a military dump, car dealer, a carpet and curtain shop and a slot machine hall were respectively housed there. In 1989 the building was restored and returned to its original state as much as possible. A penthouse was realized on the top floor. The vending hall has now left the building. In February 2010, the ING Bank was established in the building. The property is recognized as a municipal monument.
