Most people have heard the story of St George and the Dragon but few will know the location of the event itself. Local legend and folklore has it that Uffington was the scene of the battle. Uffington's pre-historic white horse is said to have been St George's steed with dragon hill below the sight of the slaying. George slayed the dragon on the hill and the place it's blood was spilled scorthed the earth which remains as a bare patch of chalk to this day. It's said that by day the horse lies on the hillside but at night it wakes and comes down to the manger, the field below, to feed.
