De Donkere sluis is de oudste sluis van Gouda en is gebouwd in de 13e eeuw, mogelijk zelfs 11e eeuw. In 1436 werd 382 meter verder een 2e sluis gebouwd, de Amsterdamse sluis of vaker het 'Amsterdams Verlaat' genoemd. Deze naam is toepasselijk, omdat Gouda daar in de richting Amsterdam verlaten kon worden.
De keersluisdeuren vormden tezamen een gekoppelde schutsluis van 382 meter waardoor veel meer schepen tegelijk geschut konden worden. Tot in de jaren vijftig van de 20e eeuw lag deze gehele schutkolk soms vol met schepen, die gelijktijdig geschut konden worden. Waren er diepliggende schepen bij, dan moest in twee trappen geschut worden om de sluisdorpels te kunnen passeren.
In 1954 werd aan de buitenzijde van de Havensluis, vanwege de grote wegverkeersdruk terplaatse, een dam met een duikersluis aangelegd. Hiermee kwam aan de doorgaande scheepvaartroute een einde.

The Donker sluis is the oldest lock in Gouda and was built in the 13th century, possibly even 11th century. In 1436 a second lock was built 382 meters further, the Amsterdam lock or more often called the 'Amsterdams Verlaat'. This name is appropriate, because Gouda could be left there in the direction of Amsterdam.
The lock gates together formed a linked lock of 382 meters so that many more ships could be articulated at the same time. Until the fifties of the 20th century, this entire lock chamber was sometimes full of ships, which could be used simultaneously. If there were deep-lying ships, they had to be articulated in two steps to be able to pass the lock sills.
In 1954, a dam with a diving lock was constructed on the outside of the Havensluis, due to the great road traffic pressure on site. This brought an end to the through shipping route.
