This a small, shield-shaped boundary marker inscribed ‘W. H. P. 1908’. It is placed on Hampton Road at the junction with Balmoral Road and is part of a long series of similar parish boundary markers around West Ham Parish. The markers take various forms and many of them still survive. At this location the marker is aligned such that the boundary runs through the metal plate from top to bottom.
The marker was placed here to mark the boundary between West Ham (to the west) and East Ham (to the east) parishes. The land to the east had until recently been part of the parish of Little Ilford, but the civic duties of that parish had been abolished in 1900 and absorbed into East Ham.
