The New Norbury Boathouse on South Promenade in Ramsey was opened on Saturday 6th April 1991 by Mrs Helen Vlasto.
Opening of the new Boathouse by Mrs. Helen Vlasto on a plaque on the north wall inside the Boathouse. The full text of the plaque is shown below:
'THE NEW NORBURY
BOATHOUSE
OPENED BY
MRS. HELEN VLASTO
SATURDAY 6TH APRIL 1991'Another plaque close by inside the Boathouse provides the following explanation as to the naming of the Boathouse and the text of this plaque is as follows:
"NORBURY BOATHOUSE
The new Norbury boathouse was built to replace
the previous structure which had stood since
1889, part of the cost of which was provided by
the Norbury family of Port Lewaigue. The total
cost of the new building was two hundred and
twenty-six thousand pounds, of which one hundred
and forty-eight thousand was raised locally.
This plaque has been provided to acknowledge
the generosity of the people of Ramsey and district
in raising this magnificent sum."The Station was established in 1829, five years after the founding of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. The RNLI took over the station in 1868.
The present lifeboat the "Ann and James Ritchie" came on station on 12 July 1991 and has the operational number 12-14 and is a Mersey Class Lifeboat.
Mrs. Helen Mary Vlasto (nee Ratcliffe) was born on 5th April 1949 and at the time of the opening was the wife of Michael Vlasto who later went on to become the RNLI’s Director of Operations.
Michael was previously inspector of lifeboats for the Western Division of the RNLI between 1984 and 1990 he was promoted to be Director of Operations in 1997 and retired in 2013 after 38 years of service with the RNLI.
