Idaho's Snake River Plain is a volcanic desert with lava flows emanating from surface fissures and shield volcanos. In Lincoln County, Pleistocene shield volcanos are called "buttes" because their prominence on the flat desert plain made them useful as orientation landmarks for early Idaho settlers and for modern hikers who dare to explore the uninhabited desert and its lava tube caves.

Kinzie Butte (sometimes spelled Kinsey) is a prominent visual landmark north of Shoshone, Idaho which can be used for orientation when traveling through the surrounding lava flow desert.

Highway 75 passes close to a radio communication tower named Kinzie Butte, from which a clear view of the west side of Kinzie Butte can be seen. Limited parking is available at the communication tower, which is about two miles west of the butte's summit. Rough vehicle trails lead to the top of the butte from the north.
