Marker is a bronze plaque set into a granite boulder. The Plaque reads:

NAME DERIVED FROM THE INDIAN
WORD MEANING "BLUE WATER."
GOV. ANZA PASSED NEAR HERE 1779.
ON A BRANCH OFOLD SPANISH TRAIL.
ANTOINE ROBIDOUX , FURTRADER,
TOOK WAGONS PAST HERE IN 1841.
THE EXPLORER J.C. FREMONT AND
J.W. GUNNISON PASSED HERE IN 1853.
OFTEN VISITED BY OURAY AND CHIPETA.
COL. FAUNTLEROY HAD A BATTLE WITH
THE UTES NEAR HERE IN 1855.
SAGUACHE COUNTY CREATED IN 1866
TOWN FOUNDED, 1867; INCORPERATED, 1874.
