This sculpture is one of many within Brookgreen Gardens and within the Peace Garden it is one of many depicting a creature from the natural world. While the sculpture is antique marble, it sits upon a brick pedistal.

Voratio
Jane B. Armstrong (Born 1921)
Vermont Verde antique marble, 1969
Gift of the sculptor

In 1964, after careers in teaching and journalism, Jane Armstrong began to study sculpture with direct carvers Jose de Creeft and John Hovannes. Within three years, she began to win awards. The subjects of her work are drawn primarily from nature, capturing in stone the rhythms of living creatures. In direct carving, form and slow take precedence over detail and anatomy. Armstrong depicted this sphinx caterpillar in a rounded, chunky form and gave the stone a high polish.

Type of insect: Sphinx Catapillar
