"This natural environment is made up of quartzites and slate, rocks that originated approximately 500 million years ago on the coasts of the Southern Hemisphere, which underwent major transformations, and there was even a time when they were part of a great mountain range similar in altitude to the current Himalayas, as a result of the collision of two supercontinents, Laurusia and Gondwana, 350 million years ago This rocky base has endured over time the action of tectonic movements, successive phases of flooding and withdrawal from the sea, and the action of land erosive agents, giving rise to the singular plain that we see today collapsing over the Cantabrian Sea. This surface is known as the coastal plain that extends from Burela to San Vicente de la Barquera. The presence of this unique natural monument is due to the combination of the different fractures that show the rocky strata and their orientation, which offers a particular weakness in front of the constant onslaught of the sea, giving rise to this shaping of the cliff so characteristic. A temporal evolution has been established for this coastal section divided into four stages. The first stage would have its development from the fractures that the rocks present, and where marine erosion acts more intensely. In the second stage the furnas or caves would originate following the orientation of the fractures in the rocks. The third stage , in which the connection between the different furnas would take place, as well as the presence of the “ollos” (as they are called in the place) as a consequence of the collapse of the land on the furnas. Finally, in the fourth stage , the formation of rocky arches would take place, which due to their fragility and instability against marine erosion, only a few would be preserved over time, especially in those areas where the rock strata are more resistant."
