In 1983 the line of the Greenwich Meridian was marked on Sun Street by a pair of stone pavement slabs. These quite rapidly became worn and in 2016 a three way initiative between Waltham Abbey Town Council, the Epping Forest District Museum and the Waltham Abbey Town Partnership saw a replacement mosaic commissioned from the Paul Siggins Mosaic Studio. This was completed in 2017.
The mosaic extends for fifteen feet across the width of Sun Street and features King Henry VIII, a map of the world, the Abbey at Waltham Abbey and a pair of Chinese dragons. These latter apparently signify the meeting of east and west. A red line through the centre of the mosaic shows the (supposed) course of the meridian itself and appears to be quite accurate.
