This information board is number 4 of a four part ecology trail in Middleton Park. It is situated at the junction of two tracks through the woods in the north east corner of the park.

Middleton Park is a remnant of the manorial estate which existed after the Norman Conquest. Middleton is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. It is leased to Leeds City Council.
It covers an area of 630 acres (255.0 ha), nearly a square mile of which 200 acres (80.9 ha) are ancient woodland.
The sign has information about ancient woodland that developed in the UK after the last ice age. There is very little left nowadays, but what is left like this is the most ecologically valuable of woodland. This is because it has a large variety of species of insects, birds, mammals and fungi.
Some parts of the park have been planted with non native tree species such as Horse Chestnut, Sycamore and others. These area of the park have much fewer species of other life, because they have not had time to adapt to these introduced species.
