John Steinbeck gave the name "Mother Road" to Route 66 in his novel
The Grapes Of Wrath, and
Lucille Hammons was the (self-proclaimed) "Mother of the Mother Road." She and her husband ran a fuel station a few miles east of here for fifty-nine years, surviving accidents, the Great Depression, and I-40. The décor of Lucille's Roadhouse echoes that old station with vintage fuel pumps outside, and there is plenty of Route 66 memorabilia inside.
