Letchmire Pastures is one of Leeds' Local Nature Reserves and has a unique history. It was once used as a stocking site for the nearby Allerton Silkstone Colliery. When the colliery closed in the 1990s the site was restored using the creation of wetland habitats which has helped shape the nature reserve you see here today.

This board gives you an introduction to the wildlife and habitats of Letchmire Pastures. The map shows the route of a way-marked nature trail around the reserve. The trail is about 1 kilometre long.

The map on the board also shows 4 points of interest along the route, each with a different type of habitat.

1. Spoil bank - made up of leftover colliery spoil and a relatively warm area in the reserve.

2. Marsh scrapes and reedbeds - more swamp than grassland it provides a good habitat for invertebrates, amphibians and wildfowl.

3. Ponds - created when the area was landscaped and in the summer a good spot to see up to 14 species of dragonflies and damselflies.

4. Lowland wet grassland - a rich diversity of wildflowers and invertebrates and important for ground nesting birds.
