Courage and Thunder shows a partial outline of a chuckwagon being pulled by its team of four horses during a race, a common sight during the Rangeland Derby portion of the Calgary Stampede. Competition is fierce as 27 drivers compete for over 1 million dollars in prize money over the 10 nights of the Stampede by racing their chuckwagons on the track that is known as the "half mile of hell".

Commissioned by the Calgary Stampede, this 16m long, 4m tall sculpture was created by the husband and wife team of Veronica and Edwin Dam de Nogales and unveiled in 2008. Also check out their other sculpture (and waymark) to the west.

If you enjoyed this sculpture, be sure to check out the rest of the art work on the Stampede Grounds. Courage and Thunder is actually just one stop along the Stampede's Art Walk, a 19 piece self-guided walking tour highlighting many of the interesting sculptures and murals around the grounds. Every one of the stops are waymarks too!
