The grave of Howard P. Drew is marked by a marble military headstone which is inscribed:

WORLD WAR

HOWARD P. DREW

SUP. CO. 809TH PION. INF.
DIED FEB. 19, 1957
AGE 66

Howard P. Drew was born in Lexington, VA on June 28, 1890. His family moved to Springfield, MA in 1904 because his father did not want to raise him in the Jim Crow south. Drew became an exceptional sprinter at Springfield Central High School. He soon set world records in sprinting events and was the first person to be given the title of "world's fastest man" for his times in the 100 yard dash.

In 1912 he was selected to represent the United States in the Olympic Games held in Stockholm. He easily came in 1st in Heat 15 and the Semifinal Heat 1 of the Men's 100 meter race. Unfortunately, an injury prevented him from participating in the final event which was won by American Ralph Craig, a man that Drew had previously beaten in the Olympic Trials. The outbreak of the World War cancelled the next Olympics scheduled for Berlin in 1916. This dashed all hope of Drew winning a gold medal in the Olympics.

Drew joined the Army and served during World War I in the Supply Company, 809th Pioneer Infantry Regiment, and the 88th Division of the U.S. Army. Upon discharge in 1919 he passed the bar examination and became a lawyer in Connecticut. He later became an assistant clerk and a judge. He was the first African American male to serve as a judicial officer in Connecticut.
