Kellys Swamp holds environmental and cultural significance as an early Nugunnawal meeting place and a sanctuary for birds, turtles, platypuses and frogs.

The Molonglo River and Jerrabomberra Creek come together here in an area that has been shaped by many extreme events such as flood, drought and fire. Before European settlement, the area was important to the Nugunnawal people and their neighbours and it was a place for ceremonies that connected them to their Country.

Jerrabomberra Wetlands Nature Reserve was declared in 1990. It is a significant wetland habitat providing a refuge for many birds and animals.
