The sports field of Helmut Schmidt University is the home field of the HSU Snipers, the American football team of Helmut Schmidt University / University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg.
The HSU SNIPERS are the official American football team of Helmut Schmidt University/University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg. As a member of the German University Sports Association (adh), the team takes part in the annual German University Championships in American Football. In addition, the HSU SNIPERS repeatedly play games against civilian teams throughout Germany in order to represent Helmut Schmidt University/University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg, as well as the Bundeswehr itself, in a way that attracts public attention and at the same time generates income for good causes.
The idea of establishing an American football team at Helmut Schmidt University/University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg already existed in the mid-1990s. At that time, it was officially decreed that every student had to be a member of a sports club. Some soldiers who already played football in civilian life were not interested in the existing sports programme and quickly founded their own sports club so that they could also pursue their passion in the service. Apart from a few scrimmages, however, the comrades hardly made an appearance at the time, which is why training could only be maintained on an irregular basis and there was hardly any thought of a game.
In 2008, a few students breathed new life into the project. Since then, the HSU SNIPERS have been taking part in the German University Championships in American Football organised by the Allgemeiner Deutscher Hochschulsportverband (adh) every year for more than 10 years. They have already been involved in organising the so-called "UniBowl" several times. This year, the tournament will again be held in Hamburg at the university. In the last two years, in addition to the UniBowl and a training camp, there have also been other games, most of which are dedicated to a good cause and are test or friendly matches for the opposing teams as well as for the HSU SNIPERS.
