In 2018, artist Airco Caravan (Maria Koning) wanted to draw attention to the date of Martin Luther King's death under the name Monument for Martin Luther King by placing a half-meter high statuette in cities in Europe and North America. A number of politicians such as Sylvana Simons, Barack Obama and Michelle Obama would also receive a copy of the image anonymously. However, the project in collaboration with Ien Sluyters and Marjon Deul leaked out. One of the statues was placed at the entrance of the Martin Luther King Park, but as a "guerilla pop-up expo". A number of statues became victims of vandalism.

The artist then turned to the board of Stadsdeel Zuid to arrive at a more definitive placement of a tribute. Placing a statue of the park's namesake seemed logical to her. A good place in the park would be sought in consultation with local residents and park visitors. After that, it was no longer discussed. Tired of waiting, the artist placed a bronze statue of King on January 15, 2020 (January 15, which is King's birthday). She had expected to be disturbed and stopped, but no one responded to her work. These were intense, because the statue had to be secured in place with the help of a concrete drill. The statue is 1.20 meters high. The artist financed it himself and hoped that the statue may remain.

The American's back reads:

“The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people, but the silence over that by the good people.”
