Ved Stormfloden 12. -14. november 1872 blev store dele af Lolland og Falster oversvømmet, 80 omkom og 50 skibe strandede på Sjællands østkyst. Også andre øer og lavvandede områder langs Øresund, Jyllands østkyst og de jyske fjorde var hårdt ramt af oversvømmelsen; her måltes den højeste vandstand til 3,3 m over dagligt vande. Også Bornholm blev hårdt ramt. Det var den største stormflodskatastrofe i Danmark i nyere tid.

By the storm flood 12. -14. November 1872, large parts of Lolland and Falster were flooded, 80 perished and 50 ships stranded on the east coast of Zealand. Other islands and shallow areas along the Sound, Jutland's east coast and the Jutland fjords were also hit hard by the flood; here the highest water level was measured at 3.3 m above daily waters. Bornholm was also hit hard. It was the biggest storm surge disaster in Denmark in recent times.
