Known as The Bill of Rights, the first ten amendments to the United States Constitution were ratified by three-fourths of the state legislatures on December 15, 1791.

The first two clauses of the First Amendment - regarding the freedoms of religion and speech - are posted at the doorway of The Call newspaper headquarters in Woonsocket, Rhode Island. The phrase, prefaced by a three-word reminder, is etched on a metal plaque mounted to a wood frame which is posted on the southwest side of the entry. It reads:

Lest We Forget

Congress shall make no
law respecting an estab-
lishment of religion, or
prohibiting the free exer-
cise thereof; or abridging
the freedom of speech or
of the press.
-- U.S. Constitution

"AMENDMENT I
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
