Heerlen station has been Heerlen's railway station since January 1, 1896. On that day, the Herzogenrath – Sittard railway line, built by Henri Sarolea, was officially inaugurated. For a long time it was the only station within the municipal boundaries, but since 1982 the Hoensbroek station has also fallen within the boundaries of Heerlen due to a municipal reclassification. In 2007, the now closed De Kissel station was opened on the line to Landgraaf, followed in 2010 by Heerlen Woonboulevard station on the line to Maastricht. As a result, the municipality now has three stations since the closure of Heerlen de Kissel station.

Until the closure of the Oranje-Nassau I mine, Heerlen station was an important transport hub in the Eastern Mining Region. The old station of Heerlen was right next to this coal mine. In 1985 the old station building was demolished and a new station building took its place. That building has since been demolished to make way for the Maankwartier new-build project. This project includes the redevelopment of the former mine site, CBS site and station area. On the east side is the Spoorplein, built over the tracks, which leads down stairs to the city center on the south side, and to the north side.
