The city trumpeter (or city crier) was an important person in the Middle Ages: he kept the inhabitants of the city informed of the latest news, rules and laws. Artist Paul Kingma has depicted the Amersfoort city trumpeter with the word 'Amersfoort'. The crosses on the shoulder caps refer to the city's coat of arms."
