Al-Aqsa Mosque is the name of the southern independent mosque, which is part of a complex of religious buildings in Jerusalem known among Arabs and Muslims as al-Haram al-Qudsi al-Sharif (Noble Shrine), although the entire area of the Noble Shrine is considered Islamic law al-Aqsa Mosque.

The building of the al-Aqsa Mosque itself is called Jami al-Masjid al-Aqsa or al-Masjid al-Qibli. The term al-Masjid Al-Aqsa is the main and oldest name for the area; the name al-Haram al-Qudsi al-Sharif was later obtained from the Mamluks.

The mosque has a total of four minarets.

"Al-Aqsa Mosque ("the Farthest Mosque") is the third holiest site in Sunni Islam and is located in the Old City of Jerusalem. The site on which the silver domed mosque sits, along with the Dome of the Rock, also referred to as al-Haram ash-Sharif or "Noble Sanctuary," is the Temple Mount, the holiest site in Judaism, the place where the Temple is generally accepted to have stood. Muslims believe that Muhammad was transported from the Sacred Mosque in Mecca to al-Aqsa during the Night Journey. Islamic tradition holds that Muhammad led prayers towards this site until the seventeenth month after the emigration, when God directed him to turn towards the Ka'aba."
