All heights in the Netherlands are measured relative to the same level, the Normaal Amsterdams Peil (NAP). A NAP height of 0 m is approximately equal to the mean sea level of the North Sea. The NAP is indispensable for flood protection. Dikes and other flood defenses keep our country dry. That is why we regularly check whether our dikes and dunes are still high enough in relation to the NAP. In addition, we also use the NAP for water management, planning construction work and studying soil movement. In order to be able to determine the height in relation to the NAP everywhere in the Netherlands, approximately 35,000 benchmarks have been applied throughout the country. These NAP benchmarks have a height relative to the NAP and are anchored in houses, bridges and viaducts, among other things. In this way we can easily determine the water level or the height of a structure. A benchmark can be found almost everywhere in the Netherlands within a distance of 1 km.
