The Kelowna Volunteer Fire Brigade was formed in 1905 and its name was officially changed to the Kelowna Fire Department in 1978.
Station #3 is one of seven fire stations in Kelowna. Formally the Rutland Fire Department, built in 1966, it was amalgamed into Kelowna in 1973.
Today the Kelowna Fire Department protects a 101 square mile area.
With high temperatures and low humidity throughout British Columbia there are approximately 263 active wildfires, most are classified out of control. Kelowna seems to be spared at the moment.
However, the Okanagan Mountain Park Wildfire, during the 2003 fire season, was the most significant interface wildfire event in B.C. history. The fire’s final size was 25,600 hectares. Much of B.C. was affected, but the communities of Naramata and Kelowna suffered the most when the blaze caused the evacuation of 33,050 people and 238 homes were lost or damaged. The fire also claimed 12 wooden trestles and damaged two other steel trestles in the historic Myra Canyon.
