The Vindelälven-Juhttátahkka Biosphere Reserve is close to the Arctic Circle. The northern part consists of mountains, the central area is forests and the southern part is coastal. In the area there are two cultural communities, the Swedish and the Sami.

Mining, reindeer husbandry and forestry are the dominant activities. In fact, you have to be unlucky if you do not come across a herd of reindeer that have chosen to stand in the middle of the road and stop the traffic. There is also a growing tourism industry due to the unique nature.

There are about 110,000 people in Vindelälven-Juhtatdahka.
Of these, 92.5% live in the coastal area of Vännäs and Umeå.
