Created by William T. Dahman in 1979 from Indiana limestone, the Peace Memorial stands on the south west side of the Monroe County Courthouse lawn. One of the few such sculptures in the country, the official title of the piece is "Congregations for Peace." An inscription on the sculpture reads "Blessed are the peace-makers, for they will be called children of God. Matthew 5:9"

In November, 2013, the statue was dedicated with a plaque to Warren Henegar, who served Monroe County as a Commissioner (1977-84) and as a Councilor (1970-76, 1989-94 and 2004-12). As a Commissioner, he ensured that Monroe County would be one of a few counties in the United States which has a monument dedicated to peace.

The plaque’s inscription reflects Henegar’s service to his community and dedication to peace:

"Warren Henegar, a Quaker, served Monroe County on the Board of Commissioners 1977-1984, and the County Council 1970-1976, 1989-1994, 2004-2013. Through his efforts Monroe County is one of only a few counties within the United States that has a monument to Peace. Warren served his country during WW II in the Pacific. He returned believing that some wars were justified, but all efforts to bring peace to the world far outweighed arguments attempting to justify war. Warren was a constant advocate for peace and nonviolent resolutions. Matthew 5:9, "Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God" embodies the philosophies that guided and served Warren Henegar. Today, November 29, 2013, we dedicate this Memorial of Peace to our friend and civil servant, Warren Henegar. November 30, 1926-August 21, 2012"

Nice to have guys like that in your town, and how wonderful it must be to be thought of in that way by your community.
