BUTTERFLY LIFE CYCLE SCULPTURE

The sculpture was designed by artist Steve Tomlinson
through working with Snaith Primary School

The Four Stages in the life cycle of a Butterfly

1. Soon after mating, the female butterfly carefully lays up to 200 tiny eggs
on a leaf, often underneath, to hid the eggs from predators.

Some eggs are round and some oval, depending on the type of butterfly.
It takes 4 days for the caterpillar to develop and escape by eating the egg.
This gives it vital nutrients to help it grow.

2. The caterpillar then spends the next 2 weeks eating leaves, becoming
2,000 times bigger than when it was born. Then it searches for a suitable branch
for the next stage in its life to make a pupa on.

3. By anchoring itself to a branch with its own silken thread,
the caterpillar, amazingly, sheds its own skin to form a pupa to sleep in.
Some pupae are quite smooth, others can be rough or spiky.
Inside the pupa, the caterpillar forms wings, legs and antennae.

4. Eventually, the beautiful butterfly emerges from the pupa skin.
It spends a few minutes drying its wings and within hours
it is ready to fly off and find a mate.

"With the cycle now complete
you can all put up your feet!"
