The ampelmann became iconic in the DDR - part of the former Soviet union - from a educational programme about trafic safety. By 1982, Ampelmann had become a TV star as he promoted traffic education throughout the former East Germany
With the reunion of West and East Germany in 1990 some of the Ampelmann lights was preserved as a symbol of the reunion or re-unification. They can be seen some places in the now united Berlin and is unique for this city.
