Old DDR Ampelmann lights on the corner of Uhlandstrasse and Kantstrasse in Berlin. Ampelmann is Berlins unusual and iconic crossing lights featuring the Eastern “Ampelmännchen” (the two traffic light men).

The ampelmann became iconic in the DDR - part of the former Soviet union - from a educational programme about trafic safety. By 1982, Ampelmann had become a TV star as he promoted traffic education throughout the former East Germany

With the reunion of West and East Germany in 1990 some of the Ampelmann lights was preserved as a symbol of the reunion or re-unification. They can be seen some places in the now united Berlin and is unique for this city.
