Coin Description:

Reverse: A picture of Frederic Douglass in the foreground and his house "Cedar Hill" a National Historic Site in the background.

Obverse: Features the portrait of George Washington by John Flanagan, used on the quarter-dollar coin since 1932.

The Historical Site:
In 1877, Frederick Douglass was almost 60 years old when he moved into this 1850's brick house with his wife Anna Murray. Anna Murray died in 1882 and 18 months later he married Helen Pitts, who was a co-worker and friend. After Frederick Douglass died in 1895, Helen preserved the house as his memorial through the Frederick Douglass Memorial and Historical Association. In 1916, it joined with the National Association of Colored Women's Clubs and then 1962 it was transferred to the National Park Service.
