Granary, Cowdray House - Midhurst, Sussex, UK - Elevated Buildings on Waymarking.com

Medieval granary made of oak frame and brick filling, placed on stone toadstools. The reason is obvious, the farmer tried to prevent mice or rats from eating the grain. The local granary is nicely preserved. It is situated between the ruins of Cowdray House and farm buildings.

"When the corn was being milled by wind or watermill the farmer needed to store the grain until there was enough wind or water to drive the millstones. Granaries could vary in size from a small hut to store a few sacks of grain to large ones with built in bins. Most granaries rested on staddle stones or were built above a cart shed or other building to protect the grain from rats and other vermin."
