"Its history begins in 1937 with an entirely different sport than football, as its name suggests it was first a velodrome. Gradually other sporting events were organized there (arrivals of the Tour de France cycling, world track cycling championships, athletics, gymnastics, boxing and rugby competitions). Marseilles families regularly attended all of these events. Then begins a great story between the Marseillais and this magical place.

In anticipation of the European Football Championship in 1984, the stadium underwent modifications, the track of the Velodrome gradually disappearing, it was completely destroyed later for the fitting out of bleachers.

In July 1992, the executive committee of FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) entrusted France with the organization of the XVI FIFA World Cup. With part of the matches scheduled to take place in Marseille, it has been decided to expand the stadium. An architectural competition was launched in May 1994 at the end of which the project by architect Jean-Pierre Buffi was selected. On September 4, 1997, the Stade Vélodrome received the “World of Football” with the draw for the final phase of the World Cup. On February 25, 1998, the stadium was completely finished with the opening of the North stand (Allées Ray Grassi).

Over the course of the major events, the stadium changes its face. The European Nations Championship in 1984, the Football World Cup in 1998, the Rugby World Cup in 2007, the Euro in 2016. Without forgetting the big concerts such as ACDC, Paul Mc Cartney, the Rolling stones, Muse and many more! The Orange Vélodrome has been transformed into a modern, state-of-the-art indoor stadium. Peu à peu d’autres manifestations sportives y furent organisées (arrivées du Tour de France cycliste, championnats du monde de vélo sur piste, des compétitions d’athlétisme, de gymnastique, de boxe et de rugby). Les familles Marseillaises assistaient régulièrement à l’ensemble de ces événements. Commence alors une grande histoire entre les Marseillais et ce lieu magique.

En prévision du Championnat d’Europe de Football en 1984, le stade a subi des modifications, la piste du Vélodrome disparaissant peu à peu, elle est totalement détruite plus tard pour l’aménagement de gradins.

En juillet 1992, le comité exécutif de la FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) confie à la France l’organisation de la XVIe Coupe du Monde de Football. Une partie des matchs devant avoir lieu à Marseille, il est décidé d’agrandir le stade. Un concours d’architecte est lancé en mai 1994 au terme duquel le projet de l’architecte Jean-Pierre Buffi est retenu. Le 4 septembre 1997, le Stade Vélodrome reçoit le « Monde du Football » avec le tirage au sort de la phase finale de la Coupe du Monde. Le 25 février 1998, le stade est totalement terminé avec l’ouverture de la tribune Nord (Allées Ray Grassi).

Au fil des grands rendez-vous le stade change de visage. Le Championnat d’Europe des nations en 1984, la Coupe du Monde de football en 1998, la coupe du monde rugby en 2007, l’Euro en 2016. Sans oublier les grands concerts tels que ACDC, Paul Mc Cartney, les Rolling stones, Muse et pleins d’autres encore ! L’Orange Vélodrome s’est transformé en un stade moderne de dernière génération et couvert. Il accueille aujourd’hui 67 000 places assises et répond aux dernières normes en matière d’accessibilité et d’énergie."
