Turun Tuomiokirkko on rakennettu matalalle Unikankareen kukkulalle. Kirkon pituus on 89 metriä, leveys noin 38 metriä ja korkeus 44,5 metriä. Tornin korkeus on 85,53 metriä.
Turun tuomiokirkko kuuluu maan merkittävimpiin historiallisiin rakennuksiin ja on Suomen ainoa keskiaikainen basilika. Pitkän rakennusajan vuoksi tuomiokirkko edustaa useaa eri tyylisuuntaa, muun muassa romaanista, goottilaista ja uusgoottilaista tyyliä.
Vaikka kyseessä on keskiaikainen kirkko, sen torni on koostunut monista eri tyylilajeista. Osaksi sen vuoksi että kirkko on palanut ja sen puurakenteet tuhoutuivat suurelta osin.
Tornia on korotettu kolmesti, vuosien 1681, 1738 ja 1827 tulipalojen jälkeen. Erityisesti Turun palo vuonna 1827 vaurioitti kirkkoa pahasti. Tuolloin tuomiokirkon kattoa oltiin uusimassa kupariseksi, minkä vuoksi katto oli avattu. Palo tuhosi tuomiokirkon sisustan ja sen vuonna 1758 valmistuneen tornin huipun. Nykyinen huippu on rakennettu palon jälkeen. Sen on suunnitellut Carl Ludvig Engel.
Torni on pitkälti tehty kivestä, mutta sen huipulla on paljon puisia rakenteita. Aivan korkein osa on tehty kuparista ja tavallisesta pellistä. Sieltä on ollut niin hyvä näköala kaupunkiin, että toisen maaimansodan aikaan ilmavalvojat käyttivät tornia havaintopaikkana vihollisen pommikoneiden näkemiseksi.
Turku Cathedral is built on the low Unikankare hill. The church is 89 meters long, about 38 meters wide and 44.5 meters high. The height of the tower is 85.53 meters.
Turku Cathedral is one of the most significant historical buildings in the country and is the only medieval basilica in Finland. Due to the long construction period, the cathedral represents several different styles, including Romanesque, Gothic and Neo-Gothic.
Although it is a medieval church, its tower is made up of many different genres. Partly because the church has burned down and its wooden structures were largely destroyed.
The tower has been raised three times, after the fires of 1681, 1738 and 1827. The fire in Turku in 1827 in particular severely damaged the church. At that time, the roof of the cathedral was being renewed to copper, which is why the roof had been opened. The fire destroyed the interior of the cathedral and the top of its tower, completed in 1758. The current peak was built after the fire. It was designed by Carl Ludvig Engel.
The tower is largely made of stone, but at its top there are many wooden structures. The very highest part is made of copper and ordinary sheet metal. There has been such a good view of the city that during the Second World War, air guards used the tower as an observation post to see enemy bombers.
