Painted turtles crossing a busy Cross Timbers Rd (FM 1171) in this part of Flower Mound are a regular occurrence, and we're fortunate that there aren't many of them finding their way to the side of the highway as roadkill.

While Lake Grapevine is to the south of here, these turtles tend to cross the highway from south to north; maybe they're headed to see the alligators that have been spotted in Argyle in recent days. The two I've rescued over the last month were about average in size, maybe about a foot long by eight inches wide. Both pulled their heads into the shell and patiently waited for me to dodge traffic. Once located to the safety of the curb, they made their way into the brush and presumably, onto their destinations.

There's no place to park here, so be careful to put on your flashers and move quickly.
